I was having a conversation today with a coworker and the topic came up as to why I don't think that NEMSA is the way to go. Now, to start with before I actually start, I know I'm about to be abused from all sides from the NEMSA folks... but in anycase... here I go...
Why do I think that IAEP is the better candidate for me.
To begin with, there is the proven financial backing and history of the IAEP. They've been around since 1992, and are still going strong.. and growing at that. NEMSA on the other hand.. has been around for less than a year, and refuses to show proof of their financial projection. I don't like that. I'd like to know what's going on with my money.. before it's spent. I'm not saying it's a bad thing that NEMSA is young, just that it is so young that it brings much doubt and worry to my mind.
Secondly, I've worked as a member of IAEP in the past on two occaions. I know that the Local is only as strong as it's eboard, and those that are interested in being a part of the eboard in this divsion.. I feel that they will be the best of the best that we've come to expect from our coworkers here. And believe me, you'd be as suprised as I am to know who is interested in leading us into the next life of unionhood in this division.. not whom you would expect at all. As of now, I still don't know how NEMSA works as those that are actual members have yet given anyone a real idea of how it's going.. and no, I don't expect to hear from them as according to the NEMSA supporters, they have no reason to tell us how they like their new union... which is a shame since in other divisions/counties there are still potential members who'd like to know this kind of stuff before they have to make a decision.
Next, noone here is at this moment entertaining the idea that they will "make a lot of money if this thing takes off". Those that are supporting the IAEP are doing so purely on the facts and notions that they are doing right by them and their fellow coworkers, and EMS in general if I may go that far. We sincerly believe this is the way to go in the direction of a union and share that idea with others, and that idea has been well received by more of our coworkers then we even dared to hope for. At least they are considering it with an open mind......
Furthermore.. I firmly believe that there should be a checks and balances to keep all parties in good and honest working order. IAEP has affiliations and bylaws that they must abide by, which means that there is always something/one to fall back on and a place to go higher up be it for negotiations, strikes, arbitrations, etc and rules that are in place for them as well as all they are afilliated with....just like the union makes sure that AMR stays on the straight and narrow. With NEMSA, there is noone to make sure that they aren't cheating us are not doing their job. I'm not saying they would, but they answer to noone.. and I don't like that. I don't believe that NEMSA should be the king that all the subjects/members must answer to, and like it no matter what. What I'm saying is, there's no checks and balances inside NEMSA.. except those that are on it's up and up board... and to me that's not good enough. They've said over and over again that they want afilliations with noone.. which means they have no notion to have a checks and balance system in place. Perhaps they feel that the members themselves will be the checks and balance system, but let's be honest.. 99% of employees are too busy doing their job and living their lives.. that they take it for granted that the Union will remain honest and true to them and their beliefs.
Moreover, I feel that the NEMSA up and ups have not proven to me that they are the union to go with. They are passionate about their cause, which I respect wholeheartedly. But they are mean, uncouth, and continually disrespectful to my coworkers, career, and beliefs.. (not to mention the disabled.. but that's a totally different post)... or at least those who voice themselves here on the message board. I commend NEMSA for it's forward thinking, and hope for the best for them. I hope they do accomplish all that they promise and dream.. but I don't feel that, for me, it's a safe place to be, on the bottom at the start of something like this. It's not like it's a community baseball team that is asking for my support.. it's an organization that's asking me to take a chance with my career and livelyhood. I appreciate that others feel that it's a great opportunity, but.. I'd rather stand back and see what they can really accomplish, and take a look at this option again in the future.. when they've had time to work out the kinks, play in the mud of negotiations and drama's that are associated with starting a new endeavor. I'd just like to see what they can really do on their own instead of taking me along on a ride that has the potential of driving me right off a cliff.
This is a brief look into the working of my and many others here in North Hollywood's concerns and internal debates. There is of course pages and pages worth that are more then worthy of mention, but this, I think, hits on the formost of topics of discussion. I hope that you read it with an open mind and reach the end of it before the bashing and slamming begins...
Thanks for your continued patronage to the IAEP site by the way!
Amy

In my best english. That was one of the best argument that an IAEP supporter has said in the past few weeks. Bravo Amy. Well said. That's not putting you down. That's me saying that what you should be preaching to the members. I do respect your piont of views. Bravo.

Well Amy you wrote allot but said very little. NEMSA has shown that they can and have done the job. Oak valley, San Mateo, First Responder. NEMSA took off in Feb and took SEIU, the largest Healthcare workers union in the country to school and they did it with very little resources. They have been on the offensive since there inception proving to the world that they are afraid of no-one. They got over 60 members to picket 250 headquarters. They completely annihilated 15 years of Local 250 causing SEIU international to step in, take over and get their enemy IAEP to come in. SEIU had to spend over 1 million dollars; and get the insurance trust the firefighters and finally IAEP to bail them out and they still had to do it illegally.
NEMSA has done more organizing, has gathered more support and respect in the last 7 months than IAEP has done since 1992 or 250 since 1989. Take a look around; the only reason you have a message board to post on is because of NEMSA. The only reason you people are even having a dialog is because of NEMSA. The only reason EMS is even on the radar scope of SEIU is because they are afraid NEMSA will do what they have said they will do. Whether you like them or not NEMSA has already changed EMS. The fact of the matter is NEMSA should have never been able to get this far. Do you understand that it is not the unorganized that NEMSA has taken. It is the strong holds of SEIU. If you know anything about war you know when you cannot protect your own forts and have to spend all your resources and energy keeping what you have you have big problems and you know that you are facing an opponent that isn’t just packing a pee shooter. When NEMSA started SEIU had 3 more units than they have now and have all but lost control of the biggest unit they have, and it looks like it will be re-voted sooner or later so NEMSA has not lost yet to SEIU. SEIU has to keep spending countless $$ and hours just to stay above water. Now they are in the fight for their lives in LA and in about a year they will be trying to hold onto Local one in Boston. So who is in the driver’s seat? None of NEMSA's areas are under attack and they are organizing without resistance. Who ever thinks NEMSA is not a force to be reckoned with better talk to SEIU. Sal couldn’t stop them David Holloway can’t stop them do you think AMR has a chance?
You people need to look around you. Weather you like it or not NEMSA is the reason all this is happening. NEMSA is kicking A$$ with a fraction of the resources of SEIU because it has the leadership. I am not talking about myself, Tim “hack man” Bonifay or the NEMSITES you people keep sparing with. I am talking bout the real NEMSA leadership, that despite your best efforts, you could never even come close to accomplishing a fraction of what they have already done. I have seen and spoken with the official NEMSA leaders and they are men of faith that truly want what is best for EMS across this country and that is why they will get it. If NEMSA can do all this without all the SEIU resources what do you think they could accomplish with them?
You are truly missing the boat here. Your own personal egos have clouded your vision. NEMSA isn’t trying to be king they are trying to give EMS to EMS not to SEIU.
Vernon, why do you keep listing First Responder as a NEMSA local. They voted to remain unrepresented. They are happy without a union. I interened up there 3 years ago and I still have friends that work there. They were, and still are, happy with no union. Until NEMSA is thier official reps you are lying about who NEMSA is representing.

This is true, nemsa forced the issue of representation and forced the labor group to wrestle with its future. I've stated this many times before. However, that is part of the whole story. One of the biggest problems that kept arising, is that the "son" seiu raised, was very much like his parents. Evident in the spin at the top of your post. There were not 60 people protesting. There were about 20, including children and spouses.
Tim was in charge of negotiations with Oak Valley's contract set to expire April 8th. Tim resigned February 25th. San Mateo was interesting on many accounts. The stewards changed their position from 250 to nemsa three weeks before the vote, with gaining fire jobs being an over-riding issue.
Obviously you missed my whole praise of NEMSA's forward thinking and hope for the best for the future.. and completely disregarded my concerns and worries of.. well everything basically that NEMSA has done and has yet to do.
Please reread my post and you'll find many of your arguments already addressed in it. I'm sure NEMSA will go far.. and I hope it does..
Your lack of addressing my concerns and instead regurgitating all the NEMSA propaganda.. well. I've just heard it all before and.. obviously it hasn't soothed any of my worries or concerns.. hence the reason behind my post.
I appreciate all that you believe NEMSA has accomplished, but for me it's not enough to garner my vote nor my support.
It's not a matter of "weather or not" I like NEMSA.. it just has a lot more to prove to me before I'd be willing to get behind it. For me it is not the right choice. For you it is.
By the way... how is it that you figure that SEIU is trying to hold onto LA? All the divisions here are IAEP, except North Hollywood.. and I have yet to hear hide nor hair that their unions are going anywhere... do you have a crystal ball that we don't know about? If so.. please tell me that I'll win the lotto on Wednesday!!!
And one last point.... NEMSA's history of "annilation".. big reason for me not to stand behind them. I don't like rouge cells that come in and continue to reap havoc and dissention wherever they go.... even when the people have told them to move on in what we call a "vote"... but you continue to close your eyes to the legality of that vote, and refuse to allow people to move on and start a new life in a new light.. albeit a light you don't agree with.. but a choice they made. The lack of grace that NEMSA shows... just turns me off further.

Is that all you got to come back with? First responder is non-union?
Well my friend you walked right into what I wanted you to. Now lets quote you "Until NEMSA is their official reps you are lying about who NEMSA is representing."
Now lets take this to our current situation: IAEP was not on the ballot and the labor board has not declared a winner, so to go with your logic; Until IAEP is our official reps you all need to stop lying about who is representing us!
isn't this horse dead yet? Do you have to keep beating it???

This is a different issue. Pending NLRB ruling, 250 is not de-certified. There is a service agreement. We already know your position on that; but, go ahead and restate it, as I'm sure you will.
Amy what vote are you talking about? How can anyone move on without the majority required by law? The law requires a run-off, but you are so experienced in labor law that I am sure you already know that.
Wow you really got me on that one. Oh... My... Gosh... you guys Vernon is so smart that even thought AMR recognizes IAEP as our representatives, he is able to see throught that smokescreen, and realizes that until the vote is finalized by the NLRB we have no representation. Oh wait, thats not right is it. Until the Vote is finalized we still have our old bargaining agent (250) who has a legal service contract with our current rep group (IAEP). This issue is so old and if you dont understand what is legal and our current reality than you are beyond help. IAEP is our official rep right now. If the NLRB rules that the vote was corrupted and NEMSA actually won then IAEP will not be our rep. But in the meantime they are. I am not lying. Come up with something new. Try sounding smart for a change. Listen to facts. Not the facts you make up to support your outlandish claims but reality. Its tough when things dont always go our way.

I'm sorry.. my ears and eyes are bleeding from the continued rhetoric..
I think I'm talking about the vote in which First Responder voted "no union".. and the vote that is awaiting certification by the NLRB in regards to the NorCal vote.. a vote that I might note, NEMSA did not get the most votes in ( ie 660 vs 604 I think it was) and it's continued lack of grace and courtesy to allow that vote to be honored by the members that cast ballots, and to let them carry on with the buisness of starting their new Local, but instead keeps trying to trip them up by tugging at the rug they are standing on.
Try again next time when you can actually prove to the members that you deserve their vote and support, which by the way.... that time is not now. Get some history and clout behind your words instead of a lot of put downs and empty blaaahhhhhhhhh........ Then come back to the table and perhaps I'll reconsider your candidate as viable in the realm of EMS. But once again.. that time is not now.........

It's time to look up from your play station, put your sippy cup down and pay attention. Tell me in non regurgitated complete sentences how the law supports your argument that IAEP is our rep? Notice I said law Brad that is L-A-W. Not what you think or what IAEP tells you. You need to support your claims of legality with the law there big man so take your best shot.
Everyone! SSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhh!!! shMOe is speaking!!!!! this might be the moment he actually gets us all to respect him and take into consideration that he might have a valid and factual point to make...

Better than that, since the L-A-W behind IAEP being our reps has been explianed on this site ad nauseum, why dont you explain to us the L-A-W behind why you think they are not our reps? That should be good reading. You are the one claiming to be a veritable labor lawyer on this issues. Go ahead and WOW! us genius.

Darn.. I guess this was not the moment... perhaps next time......
(don't you just HATE it when your questions are ignored and discarded... shucks. Medicine is bitter, perhaps a spoonful of sugar will do the trick)

Good response there Mr. 90210. You can't do it can you? That is what I thought. Amy can't back up her claims either. Well it just goes to the consistent theme of IAEP and their sheep. None of you can back up anything you say. And no Bradley no one has explained anything with statute to back it up there sippy boy, but why try something new right?
hasn't anyone put you down for your nap YET "skippy"?? really....
shoot.. I forgot the sugar for that.. guess it won't go down now without a fight.. no pun intended....

If you want insult my lack of using legal statutes to support my claims thats fine but you arent able to back up you claims either. If you want to hold me to a higher standard then lead the way and set that standard. And its XBox, Gamecube, and PS2, but the only thing I play on PS2 is Dance Dance Revolution. Good hand eye coordination is a highly valuble skill. If you think I'm offended because you post about my nerdish leanings you are going to be dissapointed. I love video games and watching cartoons (especially ones from japan), and reading books. If that makes me uncool to you and unfit to express my thoughts then I suppose that explains why I dont want to be represented by you or your union experiment.

Medic, why do you repeatedly refer to his desire to play video games? What does that have to do with anything? Does it make his opinion or vote less than someone's who doesnt play video games. Since we have been unable to see NEMSA's bylaws, I assume this means there is one that says "If you play video games, your opinion doesnt matter?"
